Chapter Fourteen

“Ah, god.” I flinched away from the pressure as Mira pressed a folded towel hard against my side.

“Hold this tight. I need to get us out of here and I can’t have you dripping blood all over the place, giving us away. It’s just a graze, but it’s deep. Into the muscle.”

“Yep, sure.” I grunted and pushed myself up to sit against the foot of the bed. “No giving us away by bleeding to death. Got it.”

Mira snorted. “You’ve lost a pint or two. Blood loss isn’t the biggest concern. Infection is.”

“How the hell did he find us?”

“That’s a very good question. He didn’t track the bike here. So, what did he track?” Mira sat back on her heels.

“You.” I looked her over. “What has Hillis given you? A phone? Jewelry?”

Mira shook her head, her lips pursed. “Nothing.”

“Something. Think, Mira. Clothes? Anything that you’re wearing?”

She paused and looked down at herself. “He…he…won me this belt buckle at a rally shortly after we met. But he would have had to arrange it in advance.”

We both stared at the chrome mud flap girl. Mira whipped the belt off and turned over the buckle, smoothing her fingers over the back. “I don’t know. I can’t see anything.” She held it up and looked at it from the side. “Shit.”

I cocked my head to see it from the angle she was looking. “It’s thicker in the middle.”

“It’s been altered and soldered. I never noticed. I mean it just looked like the normal crap metalwork on this kind of freebie. There’s enough room for a microchip and battery. Griffin liked me to wear it. That bastard chipped me. He’s been tracking me this whole time.”

“Does that mean you’ve been made? Does he know who you are?”

“No, he never would have let it get this far if he knew who I was. I lived the life. I never had secret meetings with my handler. Everything was out in the open. My information was handed over through the salon where I got my hair and nails done. Darcy, my handler, went under as an employee six months before me. Griffin loved it when I got my hair and nails done. He gave me a ride most of the time. My operation was airtight.”

“Until I blew it up.” I sighed wearily.

Mira jerked the lamp out of the wall and prepared to smash it into the buckle. “Does this mean you believe me, now?”

I raised my hand and stretched to cover the buckle. “Jesus, yes, I believe you, Agent Van Allen. Don’t smash it. We can use it and send them off again.”

She considered a moment and then lowered the lamp. “Right. Okay. Let me think. They can track Thor’s bike, so we need to get that out of here, too.” She crawled over to him and started going through his pockets.

“And maybe…his phone,” I slurred and felt myself starting to tip over. Now that the immediate danger had passed and I wasn’t going to die right away, the adrenaline keeping me upright seeped away, leaving me weak and shaky.
